Dark knight

The scene I have chosen to analyze from “The Dark Knight” directed by Christopher Nolan I will be analyzing the Joker’s social experiment. I will go through 4 methods actions lighting costume and music and sound. During this scene as the joker connects two boats, liberty, and spirit containing Gotham’s prisoners and citizens The Joker uses the social experiment by taking Gotham’s prisoners and innocent citizens and placing them in an intense situation. The reason of the experience is to see a different character and show how Gotham is corrupt. Joker wants to affect the simple citizens and when the plan fails he attempts to go for the people who are in power such as Harvey Dent.

In the film, Dark knight directed by Christopher Nolan Christopher builds suspense for characters, for example when the prisoner took the bomb there was deep music and as he got closer to the bomb the music got more intense to build suspense the director did this because it was leading the audience to think he was a big bad guy thinking that he was gonna push the button but he grabs it and throws it out the window into the water. This shows some people aren’t bad forever. I believe this because if a person does one bad thing doesn’t mean their gonna be a bad person all their life, for example, this prisoner found redemption by throwing the bomb out the window when people didn’t know what to do with it. In the scene when Batman threw joker off the building and was slowly bringing him up his coat was hanging down this represented that the coat looks like a bat showing that they’re not that different after all. When they first heard about the bombs and they were on both boats one filled with prisoners and cops and the other filled with just normal civilians the boat filled with prisoners called liberty and the other boat called spirit. The link between the detonator and the two different boats shows how the citizens are given the chance to remove the people that made their city so corrupt. Even though one boat was filled with prisoners and the other filled with innocent people no one wanted to blow anyone up because they didn’t want to have the thought of blowing a whole bunch of people up. They created these scenes to create trauma and build suspense. The joker understands the importance of law and order for the society for Gotham. Joker would have been disappointed because the whole point of blowing the boats up was to create anarchy and chaos.

Nolan breaks conventions of lighting by having the Joker swinging in and out of the light he does this because Batman is not a good guy but he’s not a bad guy so he’s swinging between both lights like the dark side and light side. lighting played a major part all throughout this scene. When Batman threw joker off the building the helicopter light was trying track the Joker falling shows others were watching them, no like they were alone.

The costume for the Joker is very important because Joker’s suit is very colorful not normal this shows the Joker is unique compared to other villans. The director used costume to define who people were without saying who they were, for example, the prisoners were wearing their orange uniform and the boat drivers boat workers were wearing their costumes and the incident civilians were wearing there normal casual clothing. With Jokers suit it’s very bright and unique but compared to batman’s costume is all black this shows Joker is crazy and not normal. In this film his lipstick is much messier (clusters and cracks) than normal, this represents that he’s very messy doesn’t care about his look and he suits this look.

Christopher Nolan uses music and sound in such important ways for example when they first heard the Joker talking over the speaker system of the boat and all the passengers were breaking out then the cop shoots his shotgun he does this to shut everyone up gets everyone’s attention. The Joker uses the microphone sound system to talk to the people on both boats and threatened that there was a bomb on both boats and he said if u push the button on the bomb it would blow the opposite boat up. But if none of them push the button he would blow both of them up. This meant the boats didn’t explode,

  1. There are a few grammatical and spelling errors. Use full stops and commas to structure sentences.

“This shows some people aren’t bad forever” Good statement now explain it. Do you agree with this. Has this prisoner found redemption. Why is he very important to this scene.

Why is it important that the boats didn’t explode. What does that represent in relation to the directors purpose of showing the importance of Law and Order to society.

Try and explain the why of every technique.

You should also show personal insight e.g. how did this scene make you feel, why?
